Consistent with previous years, blue recycle bins have been placed in University offices and classrooms to accept mixed paper for recycling. This includes paper of any color as well as envelopes, newspapers, copy paper, and carbon less forms. No brown paper bags, slick paper, carbon paper, tissues, napkins, paper towels, paper cups, food wrappings, hard cover books or waxed papers should be deposited in the recycling containers. Cardboard may be placed next to these bins and our housekeeping staff will collect the cardboard along with the paper. Cardboard includes brown corrugated cardboard and the thinner, usually gray cardboard know as boxboard. Large mixed paper recycling bins have been placed outside the Campus Center mailroom for students to recycle any mail that they do not want. Other large recycling bins have been strategically located in all Administrative or Classroom buildings to help manage mixed paper. Ink jet and laser jet cartridges are recycled on campus. For the administrative staff, please send these items to me at Facilities Management. Collection centers for student cartridges are located in each residence hall. Ask your RM/RA for locations. Mixed paper, bottle and can recycling is provided to students within the traditional residence halls at the request of their RM/RA staff. Proceeds from the returnable bottles and cans may be used for floor or building programs of their choice. In the non-traditional residence areas recycling sheds have been co-located next to most trash dumpsters. These sheds hold three 96-gallon recycling bins each. One bin is for bottles and cans, another is for mixed paper, and the third is to be designated based on volumes of specific recyclables coming out of the area. Cardboard in these areas is to be broken down and placed within the shed next to the bins. Within administrative or classroom buildings, bottle and can bins are often located in corridors leading to/from main entry/exit doors. Empty beverage containers can often be carried a short distance for placement into a recycling bin, rather than a trash can. Note that our housekeeping staff does do its best to handle beverage containers found in the trash, but extra attention from the Campus community goes a long way. If clubs or organizations would like to arrange for bottle and can collection within Classroom or Administration buildings they can do so by contacting me. This is our eleventh year collecting used cell telephones for the benefit of domestic violence victims. If you have an obsolete cell telephone that you would like to donate please drop it off to me at Facilities Management. To date we have sent in over 777 cell telephones to either the national Wireless Foundations Call To Protect Donate a Phone program or another program that benefits domestic violence victims. Phones that are still viable are given to domestic violence victims and in some cases is their only lifeline for obtaining help. Facilities Management staff are also involved with recycling many other University items such as: Fluorescent Light bulbs and Rechargeable Batteries Electronics: old telephones, pagers, typewriters, computers Motor Oil, Tires, Mattresses Construction debris and wooden shipping pallets Scrap Metal (Including refrigerators - after hazardous materials are removed) Hazardous waste (Laboratory Chemicals) Tree brush and other Yard Waste The list of recyclable items continues to expand as opportunities on Campus arise. Since 2013, food waste has been collected from dining services, and sent off-site for composting. Food waste includes both preparation (i.e. rinds, peels, shells, etc) and post consumption (i.e. scraps, uneaten items, etc) materials. Paper towels and napkins are also acceptable in this collection. Signage has been placed in the dining hall to help you segregate your food waste items from regular trash. Please continue to be diligent and proactive with recycling while on campus. Be sure to manage recyclable items appropriately, recognizing that placing inappropriate items into recycling bins will contaminate the entire bin. Understand that a contaminated bin subjects the University to a heavier work load and potential fines. The recycling committee continues to discuss ways to expand our campus recycling program on campus, so visit our web links for details and for how you can become more involved. Thank you for your help in our recycling program.
